Deferment is an official postponement of the call to serve in the armed forces. College students could recieve this excuse zand did not have to serve in the Vietnam War. Those who could not afford a college tuition and therefore cannot apply for a deferment found themselve in combatant roles in the military. This means that most of the soldiers fighting in Veitnam were the poor and lower middle class of America.
